July 05, 2013

Taiwan's NCC (National Communications Commission) said that it had received applications for 4G LTE (Long-Term Evolution) network licenses from seven tenderers, as reported by Taiwan's Commercial Times on July 2. Applicants include four incumbent telecom operators: Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, Far EasTone Telecommunications, Asia Pacific Telecom, and three new entrants backed respectively by three Taiwanese conglomerates, including Foxconn. A total of 270MHz of frequency band - 135MHz for upstream and 135MHz for downstream -  is released for auction in the frequency bands of 700MHz, 900MHz and 1,800 MHz. Each tenderer can bid for a minimum of 10MHz and a maximum of 35MHz. A qualification review by NCC-designated committee is scheduled to be completed by mid-August, with the entire bidding process to be concluded by the end of this year.
